Teeth Whitening: What You Need To Know About Brightening Your Smile
Your teeth can naturally darken with age as their colour is affected by the build-up of surface stains developed from the consumption of certain foods or drinks. Also - as we age - the dentin (inner part of the tooth) darkens as well. Because our enamel (outer part of tooth) is translucent, these changes become more noticeable over time.
However, there are ways to put the sparkle back in your smile - one being professional teeth whitening. If you've ever considered booking a professional teeth-whitening service, this blog contains all of the information you need to know. Read on to learn more!
Before Booking Your Teeth Whitening Procedure
Patients often have a list of questions when first considering professional teeth whitening. We’ve compiled a list of the most common questions and answers to help you understand what the process is all about!
Everyone wants a whiter, more beautiful smile. But if you rely on caffeine like many people do to get through the day, a whiter smile can be hard to maintain. Don't fret! At SmartSmile we can help you achieve that 'Hollywood' smile you have always dreamed of.
“Will Whitening Damage My Teeth?”
Though we all desire a brighter smile, protecting tooth enamel should always be a priority during the teeth whitening process. The answer to this question is no because at SmartSmile, we use a controlled concentration of Carbide Peroxide and Hydrogen Peroxide. At 30% concentration for in-office procedures, and 22% for at home whitening, there is no impact on the hardness or mineral content of a tooth’s enamel.
“Do Teeth Whiteners Damage A Tooth’s Nerve?”
There is no evidence that it has any effect on a tooth's nerve. However, during the treatment period clients may experience some tooth sensitivity and gum irritation in a response to hot and cold foods and beverages. After a day or two these symptoms fade away.
“Will My Dental Insurance Cover the Cost?”
Since teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure there is a fee, and depending on whether you want an in-office procedure or take-home tray, the price varies. You can contact our office today to request a quote and we can help you figure out which teeth whitening procedure is the best option for you!
“Will My Whitened Teeth Last Forever?”
Although long-lasting, teeth bleaching / teeth whitening is not permanent. SmartSmile teeth whitening procedures can last up to 6 months. After a procedure, it’s important to remember that those pesky (but addictive) foods and beverages we all love to indulge in such as coffee, wine, soda and sweets, can impact its longevity and accelerate the fading process. Though there isn’t a set rule, most people need whitening touchups every 3 to 4 months.
“How Can I Maintain My New White Teeth?”
If you have a strong sense of will power and can avoid dark drinks and food, you can postpone the fading/touch up process up to a year! Here are some tips to help prolong your teeth whitening results:
- If you do happen to have a wine and dine night, rinse your teeth with water immediately after consumption. A good habit to establish is drinking through a straw when enjoying high acidic beverages.
- Follow a good oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth as normal and incorporate flossing.
- Use regular toothpaste and only use whitening toothpaste once or twice a week to remove surface stains.
"What Does the Teeth Whitening Procedure Consist Of?"
Your dentist may suggest three methods:
- Whitening with the assistance of a heat lamp.
- Wearing a custom-made mouth guard filled with a bleach (whitening) solution.
- Take-home treatment, that includes brushing with a special bleach (whitening solution) mixed in with the toothpaste.
