How often should I go to the dentist?

by Dr. Yasaman Garakani on July 12, 2017

Most of us know that oral hygiene is essential to our overall health, but the visit to the dentist can be easy to put off when life gets busy. You may find yourself wondering how often you really need to go to the dentist. The current guideline is every 6 months for the average patient, but why?

According to the Canadian Dental Association, 48% of people who haven’t seen a dentist for a checkup in the past year have gum disease. Visiting the dentist is the best way to detect problems like gum disease and stop them from getting worse.

Dental health varies by patient and depends on oral hygiene, habits and medical conditions. Some people may need to see the dentist more frequently than others. A semi-annual or annual checkup is recommended as a preventative guideline. Even if your teeth and gums are in perfect condition, regular visits for checkups and cleaning give your dentist a comprehensive understanding of your oral health and the insight needed to advise you on treatment and care.

What should I do before my dentist appointment?

The best thing you can do as a dental patient is practice good oral hygiene in between each checkup. Brushing your teeth, flossing and eating well all contribute to a healthy smile. Keeping an eye open for any changes to your teeth and gums or sensitivities can also prevent gum disease or worsening problems.

What should I expect during my visit to the dentist?

While your first visit to a new dentist will include a full medical history, subsequent visits are generally routine. You can expect a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup, a comprehensive oral examination (assessing your teeth as well as supporting soft tissues), possibly x-rays and an oral cancer exam. After the checkup, your dentist will be able to better advise you on oral care and how frequently you should visit the dentist moving forward.
